My sports history and bio

Updated: Apr 27, 2021

Hello, my name is Nicholas Blume, I am a senior at the University of Washington studying Journalism. I grew up in Seattle, graduated from Roosevelt High school in 2017, played four years of basketball, and have always been surrounded by sports in my family. Sports run deep in my family history, and there’s no question that my upbringing with Husky athletics has shaped my trajectory and aspirations of becoming a sports journalist. My goal is to become a writer through the University of Washington and work at The Seattle Times or as a Pac-12 analyst at ESPN covering what I love the most. What I intend to achieve through a formal education in journalism include honing my voice as a writer, adding credibility to my resume, and building my network in the greater Seattle area.

Much thought and preparation has led up to this application for the Communication Journalism major. Having worked with Prep Hoops, a high school basketball scouting platform for college coaches, I have found a passion in attending high school games and writing about standout players in the state of Washington sharing my thoughts online through articles on social media. I’ve also built up a following on twitter where I share my take on sports with friends, fanatics, athletes and other journalists. Coupled with my experience on the ground, the resources on campus will further refine and professionalize my writing skills and journalistic style, and I view this as an integral stage of my progression.

As we head into a new era of digital communication and journalism, it’s become a crucial time for writers to engage in this field of study and work. More people are consuming digital media than ever before, and journalists are the gatekeepers of truth. Therefore, my enrollment into this major is my main focus. Without the knowledge of today’s society taught in communication courses, businesses would lack this new generational expertise that will advance communication and systems of strategies into the new decade. Having nearly achieved a B.A. in Journalism, I welcome faculty, peers, and my network to analyze and critique my work, my ideas, and how I convey them. I look forward for the opportunity to grow on my journey in becoming a professional sports journalist or sales executive, and am honored to have the University of Washington's Journalism program as a part of my story.
